People Empowering People Project (PEPP) will sponsor a week of fun filled activities during the month of August. The activities include a musical concert (August 22nd, 4pm, Payne Avenue Missionary Baptist Church), Benefit Program (August 27th, 7pm, Marriot), and a Health Awareness Program (August 28th, 9am, Harvest Plaza at Five Points). The Musical will feature some of Knoxville premiere artists and entertainers including Aaron Staples, Atone, Murphy Strong, and Carolyn Wilkerson. The concert is free.

The Benefit Program is a black tie event which features a tribute to the Arts. Entertainers include Carpetbag Theatre and the Knoxville Opera. The cost of admission is $50. PEPP Executive Director Estraletta Green explains, “We are excited about the upcoming program which will feature artists across various genres”. PEPP is a local non-profit health organization. It’s a terrific week for concerts, theater and sports in Dallas, with a number of highlights including the Vans Warped Tour, Smokey Robinson, and the theater production Amber Does Dallas.

It’s a terrific week for concerts in Montreal, with a number of highlights including Cyndi Lauper, the Moody Blues, and Iron Maiden.

Cyndi Lauper, who celebrated her 57th birthday last Tuesday by releasing her eleventh album, “Memphis Blues”, will perform at the Metropolis on 4th July. Lauper’s 1986 hit “True Colors” rose to No. 1 on the Billboard charts and remains one of her most cherished songs.

The Moody Blues hold a unique place in rock ‘n’ roll history. They are one of the few “British Invasion”-era bands to have their hit-making years begin in the early 1960s and stretch throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Graeme Edge, founding member and drummer, says that the show will include “The songs we’ve got to do – otherwise we won’t get out alive – (are) ‘Nights in White Satin,’ ‘Tuesday Afternoon,’ ‘I’m Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band),’ ‘I Know You’re Out There Somewhere’ and ‘Isn’t Life Strange’”.

Iron Maiden’s Final Frontier Tour comes to the Centre Bell on 7th July. Their performance is expected to include classics such as Fear of the Dark, Number of the Beast, Running Free and Hallowed Be Thy Name.

The Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC), an international meet for the world’s best video game players, will be held for the first time at Disneyland® Paris by Games Solution. This 7th edition will take place from June 30 to July 4, 2010, and will gather the 600 best players and teams on the planet to compete for cash prizes in tournaments for both console and PC games including Counter Strike, Quake and Guitar Hero.

10 tournaments to share a passion, together
Introduced for the first time in 2003, the ESWC has established itself as the leading event in the world of video games. The only one of its kind, this event is an annual electronic sports celebration that gathers the best teams in the world for competing on video games specially designed and adapted to player confrontation.

The 2010 program will include five tournaments for console games and five tournaments for PC games: Counter Strike, Counter Strike (women’s tournament), Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne, Trackmania ESWC, Quake, Defense of the Ancient, Need for Speed: Shift, Street Fighter 4, FIFA 10 and Guitar Hero. The stakes for the players are no small matter either. Beyond the battle for the bragging rights of “World Champion” in their discipline, each tournament champion will win a share of the $213,500 available in cash prizes.

National qualifications
Established in over 50 countries, players must qualify to compete at the ESWC. Any player wishing to take part must attend one or more national events during the season in order to ultimately qualify for the national heats, which are held by local organizations. Participants who make the finals will qualify for the ESWC. Qualifying heats started in January 2010 and will run through the end of April. The national finals in the participating countries will take place during May 2010.

The qualification system often depends on the number of contestants and on how much interest electronic sports can spark off in the country, as well as on the quality of the national organizations involved. Some countries like Denmark have high-level players but do not have major local tournaments, and have thus been deprived of ESWC qualifications for years, while other countries like the United Kingdom boast a very active national community and wide-scale events, but have never succeeded in placing a single player in the finals.

The ESWC will be establishing its quarters in the impressive Disney’s Newport Bay Club® Convention Centre at Disneyland Paris. The event will be broadcast to over 50 countries and live online at www.escw.com.

FRENCH PAVILION WILL HOST LARGEST GROUP TO DATE AT NABSHOW IN LAS VEGAS FROM APRIL 12-15, 2010

The world’s major broadcasting and audiovisual get-together, NAB Show, will be held in Las Vegas from April 12 to 15, 2010. Now in its 80th year, this show is unquestionably a reference in the world of broadcasting. A delegation of French companies will be presenting French industry’s achievements on a 1,600-quare-foot pavilion, organized by UBIFRANCE, the French Agency for International Business Development, in partnership with the Paris Chamber of Commerce. For the pavilion’s second year, Ubifrance will host 19 companies on the French Pavilion – 40% more companies than last year.

The audiovisual sector in France is mainly driven by the development of digital technology that has led to radical changes both in industry and in the services development. The major event of recent years is the unexpected success of digital terrestrial television. Since the beginning of 2010, 89% of the population has been covered. The deployment of DTTV is continuing to grow with a goal of reaching 95% of the French population by 2011.

In 2008, there was a sustained rate of growth in access to digital media. 57.8% of households had access to digital television (DTTV, satellite, ADSL or cable). Nearly 45% of French households have taken advantage of that access and have gone fully digital. DTTV is responsible for much of the growth. The reception of TV via ADSL also accounts for significant growth.

For all these reasons, French audiovisual companies want to go worldwide present their cutting edge technology. This is why, for the second year,  Ubifrance, the French agency for international business development, has organized a French pavilion for NAB Show.

Located in North Hall, the French Pavilion will present 19 exhibitors coming from the world of radio or television, electronic media and content industry. French know-how will be well showcased: 3-D images with or without glasses, 3-D animation production, archiving and digital media asset management, conditional access solutions, virtual sets, secured content management, as well as audio and video broadcast solutions, TV and radio broadcast systems, etc. The companies are sure to unveil their latest innovations over the four days.
